Since Yoga is mainly about practice (…if
you don’t practice it, it is rather worthless…), we just
provide you with some brief historical information about its
origins.
Yoga is a very ancient practice which can
be traced back to over 5,000 years ago.
Older findings are believed
by some to show that yoga existed in some form well before
the establishment of vedas in the Indian subcontinent. As
such, the history of yoga may go back to eight thousand
years, depending on the perspective of the historian.
The oldest legend about the origins of Yoga
dates to the times of Siva. It is told that Siva taught the
ancient technique of yoga to his wife Parvati in a cave in
the Indian Ocean. A fish listened to these teachings and put
them in practice. The power of yoga was so great that the
fish became a man (which is where the name Matsyendra came
from i.e. fish who became man). He taught this discipline to
others and so this practice has been taught from Master to
disciple until these very days.
